Tarot Decks consist of 78 cards - Major Arcana cards and numbered cards with symbolism represented by wands, cups, swords, and pentacles.
Wands (fire element) usually indicate an action is needed. Cups (water element) represents your emotions and relationships and are a reminder to listen to your intuition.
Swords (air element) represent your thoughts and the need to make a plan. Pentacles (earth element) are representative of your physical body and material/money issues. There are different "spreads" (patterns to lay the cards) associated with Tarot, and the cards are all interpreted either alone, or together, depending on the spread.
There are many rules associated with Tarot. Oracle Decks are less restrictive in their use and are generally smaller in number than Tarot. Usually consisting of 44 cards, Oracle Decks do not have suits but are usually themed (angels, mermaids, dragons, etc.) and are used for looser interpretations.
While Tarot shows both negative and positive cards in the deck, and can also give warnings, Oracle Decks are generally viewed as lighter and more positive. Oracle Decks give a general guide to your questions, while Tarot can sometimes be more intense and deeper. If you are a beginner, look for a deck that has a companion book, as interpretations differ among the creators of the decks and their meanings behind their cards.
