Not everyone is feeling the holiday spirit. In fact, treatment for depression jumps as much as 40% during the holidays. There are many reasons for this increase – including a lack of natural sunlight (known as SAD or Seasonal Affect Disorder), a feeling of isolation or disconnectedness, the intensification of mourning a loved one lost during the year, and a general feeling of lack of accomplishment or the fear of not meeting expectations of those you may only interact with during the holidays.
Social pressures come at us from all sides: television commercials depicting a warm, cozy meal with fifteen of your closest relatives, “Friendsgiving”, Christmas songs on the radio, decorations in stores, expectations of “buy, buy, buy!” everywhere you turn…all of these things can lead to an increase in moodiness or depression for many people.
Economically, times are tough for a lot of people. Facing Christmas or Yule-time expectations of lavishing gifts on your family and friends adds to the pressure. Travel expectations and pressures to be with your family increase. Facing spending hours with judgmental family members who don’t understand you, a fear of not being as accomplished as others at the dinner table, and a forced conversation with people when you are normally shy or quiet can just add to the pressure, until the only thing you want to do is crawl into your own bed, at your own home, alone.
Thankfully, there are many crystals that have been known to reduce feelings of depression, isolation, and social pressure. There are others that can increase loving feelings towards yourself and feelings of self-acceptance. They are inexpensive, easy to use, charge, and can be carried with you. Some of them can be used as a worry stone, in rituals, or in meditation.
We have selected some of our favorite crystals to use during the holidays.
Sugilite – “Acceptance” – reminds you to love yourself, accept others, and acts as a protection for trauma to your soul. It has a calm, healing, loving energy and helps you reconnect. Wear this one close to your heart.
Rose quartz – “Self-Love” – another crystal that is perfect for healing your heart, recovering from old wounds to your psyche, and acts as a conduit for forgiveness and acceptance
Ruby in Zoisite – “Transformation” – it aids in releasing pain, sorrow, and grief. It encourages you to really feel your emotions, but offers a conduit to recovery
Apache’s Tear – “Recovery” – another transformative stone, absorbs negativity and re-releases it as positive emotions
Amethyst – “Protection” – provides assistance in overcoming judgment, fear of failure, and opens a connection to your loved ones who have passed. This helps us feel not so alone.
Turquoise – “Reflection” – reflective of water and air, turquoise helps ward off negative energy. It is a powerful stone, used for calming and healing for hundreds of years. Carry it with you to protect you from negative thoughts, projections, and feelings of failure.
Labradorite – “Strength” – strengthens your will, and purpose. Enables you to walk away from situations that are stressful, offers encouragement and calm. Enables you to deal with higher levels of stress that often show up around the holidays.
Chevron Amethyst – “Clarity” – combines the clarity of thought and consciousness of quartz with the protective properties of amethyst. Clear quartz is a powerful intensifier to the qualities of amethyst.
Carnelian – “Motivation” – increases and stimulates creativity, offers courage, promotes positive life choices, controls and discourages apathy, and motivates for success.
Lapis Lazuli – “Harmony” – may be worn to guard against psychic attacks, quickly helps to relieve stress, and provides feelings of harmony and peace.
Selenite: “Light Bringer” – provides clarity and brings light to the dark. A selenite wand (as shown in the picture) is a powerful tool to use to cleanse negativity and free your aura from spikes and pins. Selenite never needs to be cleansed – it releases all negativity and holds powerful positive vibrations.
Smokey Quartz: “Grounding” – relieves tension and stress, anxiety, or panic attacks; wards off negative thinking, and helps to eliminate worry and doubt when faced with chaos or confusion.
Larimar: “Calm” – Cools tempers and calms fear, relieves stress and nurtures your emotions. Great to use in meditation.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, sad, depressed, out of touch, or isolated, try using one of the crystals to supplement your other methods of combatting the effects of the holiday blues.
