Selecting, Cleansing and Dedicating Crystals

Selecting, Cleansing and Dedicating Crystals

Crystals have been around and in use since the earth formed.  They are the “earth’s DNA” and have continued to change and evolve as the planet itself changes and evolves.  Depending on how a crystal was created (formed under pressure, in chambers and caves, created deep underground, formed in layers or dripped into being), their properties and functions vary.   They can absorb, reflect, conserve, focus and release energy.

To begin selecting crystals, determine what function you would like them to have.  Are they primarily for decoration, such as in jewelry or specific placement in the home?  Choose diamonds, garnets, geodes, amethysts and sapphires.  They are vibrant stones, with other attractive qualities.  Citrine is not only beautiful, but is known to attract wealth.  Amber is a cleansing stone and can clear negative energy in a room.

Are you feeling work fatigue and experiencing electromagnetic “smog”?  An amethyst geode placed near your computer can help to absorb that electrical interference that can be draining for some.  Other crystals (smoky quartz for example) can bring energy into spaces that are draining, as well as clearing negativity.  Experiencing an energy vampire?  (You know what I’m talking about, that coworker or acquaintance that just seems to drain the energy from the room.)  Choose orange cornelian or hematite.

Once you have chosen a crystal or stone, it is very important that you cleanse them as soon as possible after obtaining them.  There are many methods for cleansing crystals, and all of them are quite effective.  Most crystals that are not fragile or friable can be rinsed with clear running water or in the ocean.  Salt water can also be used, but it is important to rinse with clear water after immersion in salt water to protect any crystals or stones that could be fragile.

Friable or delicate layered crystals or clusters can be left in rock salt or sea salt overnight.  Afterward, make sure to use a soft brush to gently remove all of the salt so as not to damage these delicate types.

Certain crystals such as carnelian and clear quartz are “cleansing” crystals in their own right.  You can store your other crystals with a piece of either of these, and they will keep your other crystals clean and clear.

Smudging crystals with the smoke of white sage or palo santo wood is an effective cleansing technique that also releases positive energy and clears negativity from the space while doing so.  Move the crystals through the smoke created by the white sage or palo santo.

Once you have cleansed your crystals, you can focus on their dedication.  This helps create a relationship between the crystal and your intention for it.  Hold the crystals in your hands.  State your intention for the crystals – either out loud, or while focusing on the crystals in your mind.  Dedicate your crystals for the purpose that you obtained them – to clear negativity, to help heal a broken heart, to find a positive relationship, to eliminate depression, to bring wealth or happiness…be clear and confident in your dedication.  Be specific with your intention, and be open to the magic that each crystal holds.  You can carry the crystal with you on your person, or display it somewhere that you will see it often during the day.  Continue to state your intentions with your crystals, and recharge them with the light of the moon (simply place them in a windowsill or outside where the moon’s rays will shine on them for a minimum of two hours).

Suggestions for Using Crystals:

As wedding favors:  Small velvet pouches with a piece of morganite (encourages loving thoughts and actions, celebrates lasting love), a small piece of sardonyx (brings happiness and stability to marriage) and a piece of rose quartz (can be purchased in a heart shape, and is a symbol of pure and unending love).

Loss of a loved one:  Carry Apache Tear (black obsidian – comforts grief, aids in enabling the wearer to slowly release negativity) and Bloodstone (helps with mental fatigue, dispels depression, brings in spirituality).  Also can include the combination stone Azurite with Malachite (the two crystals together bring deep healing and relieve negative thought patterns).

Chakra Work:  For focusing on specific chakra centers

  • Root Chakra:  Bloodstone, Tiger’s Eye, Hematite, Fire Agate, Black Tourmaline
  • Sacral Chakra: Citrine, Carnelian, Moonstone
  • Solar Plexus Chakra: Malachite, Calcite, Citrine, Topaz
  • Heart Chakra:  Rose Quartz, Jade, Green Calcite, Green Tourmaline
  • Throat Chakra: Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise, Aquamarine
  • Third Eye Chakra: Amethyst, Purple Fluorite, Black Obsidian
  • Crown Chakra:  Selenite, Clear Quartz, Amethyst, Diamond

Divination:  Using a selection of the crystals, place them all in a large velvet pouch.  Focus on your question, reach into the pouch and pull out one crystal.  Knowing the crystal’s unique purpose will help you with your questions.  Examples can be amethyst (life change, faithfulness in love, freedom from jealousy), black agate (will find courage/prosperity), bloodstone (an unpleasant surprise, unlikely to be an illness), garnet (answer on the way), hematite (new opportunity), rose quartz (love on the way, a healing love), topaz (use caution), etc.
